About Ronald Forbes

Ronald Joseph Forbes is a three-time Olympian in the sport of athletics, proudly representing the Cayman Islands on the global stage. A specialist in hurdling events, Forbes has competed in the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Summer Olympic Games, and served as the flag bearer for the Cayman Islands during the opening ceremonies in both 2008 and 2016.

During his collegiate career, Forbes competed for Florida International University (FIU) from 2005 to 2008, where he became the university record holder in the 110m, 60m, and 55m hurdles. He earned All-American honors in both the 110-meter and 60-meter hurdles, finishing 3rd at the 2008 NCAA Indoor Championships and 8th at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships.

Forbes began his athletic journey at the age of 14 as a discus thrower and shot putter, motivated by the opportunity to travel and earn a scholarship. In 2004, he received a scholarship to Bacone College in Muskogee, Oklahoma, where he became the Red River Athletic Conference champion in the 400-meter hurdles. After one year, he transferred to FIU to further his academic and athletic pursuits.

In addition to his Olympic appearances, Forbes has competed in multiple international championships, including the 2011 and 2015 World Outdoor Championships, and the 2010, 2012, and 2016 World Indoor Championships. He also represented the Cayman Islands in the Commonwealth Games in 2006, 2010, 2014, and 2018.

Forbes holds the Cayman Islands national records in the 55m, 60m, and 110m hurdles, as well as the FIU university records in those same events.

In recognition of his achievements and contributions to sport, Forbes was honored in 2017 with the renaming of the football stadium in his home district of North Side to the Ronald J. Forbes Playing Field. That same year, he was officially recognized as a National Sports Hero in the Cayman Islands.
